Winter Games Planning
2010 Olympic Winter GamesOur office is very proud of the role we played in the successful Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Bid. Acting as Planning Consultants we were directly involved in the delineation and design of the proposed alpine skiing venues on Whistler and Blackcomb, the skiing and snowboarding venues at Cypress Bowl as well as the Callaghan Valley concepts (site of the Nordic and ski jumping venues). 2010 Athlete VillageBHA was engaged with EKISTICS Town Planning to create the Master Plan for the Athlete Village in Whistler. This project presents a synthesis of two intertwined development plans; the first, a complete Athlete Village for 3,000 athletes, officials and team supporters for the 2010 Games; the second, a mixed-use sustainable neighbourhood which maximizes the legacy of Olympic investment for the benefit of Whistler residents. This layout responds to the mountainous landscape and is designed to be environmentally sensitive. Important landscape features, views and solar access were preserved and incorporated into the plan. Further, a right-of-way was identified and preserved for potential future lift serviced access on to Whistler Mountain. All of the accommodation requirements in the village will be met through the construction of permanent residential units. For the Games, each unit will be temporarily outfitted for the needs of the athletes, including physiotherapy rooms, equipment storage areas, and team meeting facilities. At the centre of the development is the Village core. Permanent facilities will include the Athlete Training centre, a hotel, hostel, retail space, a restaurant and meeting facilities. During the Olympics temporary structures will be in place to house athlete food services, entertainment, retail, interfaith chapel, medical facilities, administration and security. The secure transportation mall and parking lots will be converted into soccer fields and a track following the games. Following the Olympics the temporary structures will be removed and the athlete residential units will be renovated into permanent residential units (duplexes, townhouses, condominiums and apartments). The majority of these units have already been pre-sold to Whistler residents as deed-restricted units designed to provide more affordable accommodation. The rest will be sold as market units designed to offset the cost of development. The core are will be centred around the Athlete Training Centre, a hotel, hostel, restaurant and small retail facility. |

Callaghan ValleyThe Callaghan Valley is the site for the Whistler Olympic Park. This facility includes the venues for ski-jumping, biathlon, cross-country and Nordic combined events. In the Spring of 2002, and at the request of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Bid Corporation, Brent Harley & Associates Inc. acting as the prime consultant began the task of developing a process for envisioning an overall commercial and public recreation plan for the Callaghan Valley. This vision was to take into account the Nordic and ski jumping venue while also reflecting the existing and future land and resource use interests within the Valley. The resultant plan outlined a preferred vision for the 60,000 acre site. |
Whistler / Blackcomb / Cypress MountainBHA was engaged by the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Bid Corporation to evaluate profile and illustrate the proposed ski and snow venues for the 2010 Winter Olympics. During this process we determined the strengths and weaknesses of various venue options in terms of FIS standards. We also took into account all of the safety issues, placement of courses, spectator access and viewing. Subsequently we illustrated how any identified shortcomings could be rectified. The results of this work were outlined in the Bid Book submitted to the International Olympic Committee.

Halifax Canada Winter Games 2011 |

Winter Games PlanningThe primary goal of this study was to determine the best combination of facilities at Ski Wentworth and Ski Martock to act as the Skiing Event Venues for the Halifax 2011 Canada Winter Games. Detailed digital topographic, planimetric and cadastral information of Wentworth and Martock were received from the two ski areas. This was used as the basis for the completion of slope and elevation maps of the terrain. Once complete, the templates of the various disciples were overlaid onto the maps. Ignoring existing conditions and legal boundaries, a series of opportunities and constraints were identified where the criteria matched the physical capability of the land. Each one these sites were then evaluated in an effort to distinguish their strengths and weaknesses. This study culminated in a series of conclusions and recommendations aimed at ensuring that the Canada Winter Games will be a success while ensuring a legacy that will strengthen the ski industry offering in the Maritimes. |
