Riverside Camping & RV Resort, Whistler, B.C.

For this installment of our “From the Archives” blog post, we’re looking back nearly 20 years to the design of Riverside Camping & RV Resort in Whistler, BC.

Brent Harley and Associates Inc. designed the 40-acre resort in 1999. The resort features a combination of walk-in sites, and full-service RV campsites, along with log cabins and Mongolian style yurts. As an added bonus for families, there is an 18-hole putting course on the edge of the Resort!

The Valley Trail and the Fitzsimmons Creek run through the property, creating a serene setting and offering visitors a car-free connection to locations throughout Whistler. The natural setting and proximity of the Resort to both the beautiful Green Lake and the Whistler Village has made this four-season resort a popular place to stay.

While a lot of our projects are at a master planning scale, this project features detailed design work including a planting plan. Most of the work we produce now is digital, but there’s no denying how great hand drawn site plans can look!

As detailed in the initial plans, as Riverside Camping & RV Resort has evolved over the years. The initial phase of development to the east of Fitzsimmons Creek was complemented by Phase 2, which has seen additional full-service camping sites (and more yurts!) developed to the west of the Creek.

2017 CSLA Awards of Excellence

BHA would like to congratulate one of our staff on a 2017 CSLA Award of Excellence! Alix MacKay was part of the team that developed the Outdoor PLAYbook, a key resource for Canadian schools and communities looking to develop outdoor play and learning environments. The Award of Excellence was given in the category of communications. Alix worked as Project Coordinator for the project, writing content, communicating with stakeholders, and helping to create the graphic identity for the website. The Outdoor PLAYbook team was comprised of researchers from the University of British Columbia (from the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Medicine), as well as members of the Vancouver School Board. The team worked closely with parents, teachers, and local design practitioners on the development of the website and accompanying resources.
