A new Adaptive Mountain Bike Trail has been announced for the lower elevations of Mount Seymour. The trail will link Old Buck, Bridal Path, and the Empress Bypass to create a loop that will be a major addition to the North Shore mountain biking scene.  AMtb (Adaptive Mountain Biking) offers an accessible way for riders with various physical disabilities to enjoy mountain biking and get outdoors.  The North Shore Mountain Bike Association (NSMBA) is leading this project and organizing the fundraising campaign to get the trail built. To support the project and make a donation, go to: https://chimp.net/campaigns/trails-for-all-seymour-accessible-mtb-loop.

Since 2016, BHA has worked with BC Parks exploring a range of new opportunities at Mount Seymour Provincial Park.  We are pleased to share this announcement and are excited for this significant upgrade to the Mount Seymour mountain biking trail network!

BHA is proud to learn that one of its projects has been awarded Iowa Top New Tourist Attraction for 2018 by MSN.  The MSN Lifestyle article highlighted the best new tourist attractions all across America. As a state of the art all-season park, Sioux City Cone Park was selected as the top tourist spot for the state of Iowa.  Built in 2016, the park’s recreation facilities were design by BHA as part of the Cone Park Master Plan, a project developed in conjunction with SEH.  The first phase of development of the Cone Park Master Plan included a selection of core activities and services intended to create a major all-season recreation hub for the region : an exciting Tube Park showcasing on-snow sound and light effects, a day lodge with an outdoor fire pit, an all-season trail network, and a refrigerated ice rink that turns into a splash pad for the summer months.

BHA was honored to be invited to present their expertise in planning downhill mountain bike areas to the CWSAA (Canada West Ski Areas Association) members.  Kyle Vash, Resort Planner at BHA,  presented an overview of the planning process for the development of a mountain bike park trail network using the new Big White Bike Park, planned by BHA, as a study case.

CWSAA Mountain Bike Operations Workshop was held on October 3rd 2018 in Sun Peaks, BC.  The Workshop was sold out and regarded as a success.  The well-attended event was appreciated by CWSAA members that were interested in developing biking facilities at their resort or simply wanted to keep up with the industry’s latest trends.

BHA was selected in the summer of 2017 to develop the first stage of the Cheakamus Crossing Phase 2 Master Plan.  The goal of the project was to develop the plans for Whistler’s newest employee restricted housing development. BHA forged the blueprints of the future neighbourhood by completing a full analysis of the land, developing the housing densities, the project goals and objectives as well as the detailed vision for the new residential development. Fast forward a year later, the RMOW is moving the project into the second stage of planning.  The latest plans, refined by the IBI team, will be presented to Whistler Community on October 1st 2018.

At the beginning of 2018, BHA was engaged by the SLRD (Squamish Lillooet Regional District) to develop the Pemberton Valley Trail Master Plan.  The Master Plan aims to define and describe a framework that will guide the future of this important trail system.  The Friendship Trail was identified as key connector for the Pemberton Valley, linking the Lil’wat Nation – Mt. Currie and the Village of Pemberton. By offering a safe alternative from the road side of Highway 99,  it is envisioned as an accessible,  non-motorized trail that will support active transportation, recreation opportunities and contribute to building a strong connection between the two communities.  The project is a joint venture between Lil’wat First Nation, the various level of government and local community.  A key component of the implementation of the Friendship Trail is the construction of a bridge over the Lillooet River. The first phase of construction for the bridge was initiated at the end of August 2018 and will continue until September 16, capturing the small construction window defined by fisheries constraints.

At the end of July 2018, BHA, its fellow sponsors and WORCA (Whistler Off Road Cycling Association) were hosting the 13th Annual Tour de Trash, one of Whistler’s local longest running mountain bike race.  With a new course (See Trailforks Here) and almost 15o riders participating, this year’s event was a great success.  Inspired by Whistler AWARE Zero Waste Event and following BHA’s vision for sustainability, this year’s Après was also a ZERO WASTE event, with 100% of the waste being composted or recycled, we were happy to have planned and hosted a big event with a small footprint!

The Toonie Races are a Whistler classic, bringing together local riders for a exciting evening of challenging bike riding and fun social time.  With the profit of the event going back to WORCA to support trail maintenance, the entire BHA team was proud to be out there volunteering for the day.  Good job everyone and congrats to all the riders who completed the course!

One of BHA’s long standing clients, Whistler TAG – The Adventure Group, is innovating this season with a brand new multimedia nature walk; Vallea Lumina.  Located at Cougar Mountain, just north of Whistler Village, the facility will be open to the public at the end of July 2018.  BHA was part of the process from day one, taking part on the land use planning of the site and the application process for the 1.5km trail.  The facility is staging from TAG base area and is meandering through a beautiful forested area.  Vallea Lumina will be a first in the area,  as a pioneer of this new type of adventure suitable for all ages, TAG Whistler is pursuing a family oriented vision for its all-season attraction.   The Multimedia, light, sound and special effect technology has been implemented on the site by the Montreal-based company, Moment Factory.

This week is the kick off for the Big White Bike Park 2018 Season.  With the Bike Park opening day on June 28 and the Slope Style Event from July 4-7th, it’s calling for some good times at the resort.  With the Bike Park at the core of the summer activities planned for the resort, its success is supporting the summer visitation for the resort. An array of other facilities and activities are now operational, such as the new campground at the base of Black Forest, horseback riding, hiking and the many restaurants and services that will be open all season long.  The BHA team is really excited to be part of this major all-season resort development in BC.  We salute our friends at Big White and are looking forward to test ride the new trails this summer!
